Description

Ego – Jun 2015 – Acrylic on Canvas

I used to think that it was cool or interesting to be self-destructive because most of the creative people I’ve ever respected were their own worst enemy… this painting is about realising that my hangups, self-consiousness, doubt and insecurity are drastically impacting my ability to connect to the world around me in a meaningful way.

Each black vine wrapped around my “potential” is a¬†painful memory, or perceived hurt to which I’ve attached myself, and used it to create who “I am”. By consciously acknowlegding these silly attachments, I can slowly unravel them and allow my “potential” to be seen. Creating artwork or falling in love both make me feel incredibly vulnerable, but nothing makes me lonelier than realising that I sabotaged my potential by hiding behind my own ego.
